Net Neutrality Dispute: Airtel Defends Priority Postpaid Network Slicing Service

Airtel Denies Net Neutrality Violations Over Premium Postpaid

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel has formally defended its ‘Priority Postpaid’ service before the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), stating that the offering is fully compliant with existing net neutrality regulations. The service, which reserves specific network bandwidth for premium postpaid subscribers to ensure high data speeds during congestion, had come under regulatory scrutiny for potentially creating an unfair preference in data transmission.

Airtel argued that net neutrality guidelines prohibit discrimination based on the source, destination, or content of the data traffic, but do not prevent telecom operators from offering different Quality of Service (QoS) tiers to users. The telco emphasized that the priority service is enabled via standard 5G network slicing technology, which allows operators to allocate logical network partitions for specific service levels.

Bandwidth Reservation vs Network Discrimination

Regulators are examining whether reserving bandwidth for a premium category of users degrades the service quality of general prepaid and postpaid subscribers. Consumer groups have raised concerns that priority tiers could lead to systemic throttling of standard network traffic. Airtel maintained that its network capacity has been expanded to ensure that priority plans do not impact the standard user experience, arguing that quality-of-service differentiation is essential for recovering massive 5G infrastructure investments.
