E-Commerce Titan Expands Consumer Ecosystem into Food Delivery Sector
In a bold strategic expansion, Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart has officially confirmed plans to enter India’s lucrative online food delivery market. The company will launch an intensive pilot program in Bengaluru within the next 30 days, testing consumer value propositions, restaurant onboarding workflows, and delivery logistics before evaluating a nationwide commercial rollout.
The strategic entry challenges the long-standing market duopoly of Zomato and Swiggy, which currently command over 90% of India’s food delivery transactions. By integrating food ordering into its core consumer app, Flipkart aims to leverage its massive existing user base, driving daily active user (DAU) engagement and maximizing customer lifetime value across its digital services network.

Deep Integration with ONDC Network Streamlines Logistics Overhead
A core differentiator of Flipkart’s operational playbook is its deep technical integration with the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Rather than constructing an expensive, capital-intensive restaurant sales team and dedicated delivery fleet from scratch, Flipkart will connect directly to ONDC’s open merchant catalog, tapping into thousands of registered local restaurants and third-party logistics fulfillment providers instantly.
The food delivery pilot complements Flipkart’s rapidly scaling quick-commerce vertical, Flipkart Minutes, which offers 10-to-15-minute grocery and electronics delivery across major metros. By sharing dark store infrastructure, delivery partner pools, and routing algorithms between Flipkart Minutes and food ordering, the company expects to optimize last-mile delivery economics significantly.
CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy Signals Long-Term Commitment to Market Disruption
Addressing industry skepticism regarding late market entry, Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy asserted that “there is no such thing as waiting too long” in high-frequency consumer categories. With disciplined capital allocation, superior technology integration, and attractive pricing structures via ONDC, Flipkart aims to capture substantial market share as Indian food delivery penetration expands into Tier-2 and Tier-3 urban centers.
