Retail Inflation: Mumbai CNG Prices Hiked by ₹2 to Reach ₹86 per Kilogram

MGL Increases CNG Prices in Mumbai Metropolitan Area

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has announced a retail price hike for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by ₹2 per kilogram in Mumbai and surrounding municipalities. Following this adjustment, retail CNG will retail at ₹86 per kg, effective from June 2, 2026. MGL cited rising domestic gas sourcing costs and increased operational outlays in municipal pipeline networks as key drivers behind the revision.

The price revision is expected to impact public transport systems in Mumbai, including auto-rickshaws, black-and-yellow taxis, and municipal BEST buses. Operator unions have already initiated talks with the state transport department, requesting tariff revisions to offset the increased fuel costs, which could lead to higher commuting expenses for Mumbai residents.

Impact on Urban Logistics and Commuter Spending

In addition to public transport, local delivery service providers and commercial cargo networks are evaluating the impact on their operational margins. With fuel prices trending upwards, retail inflation across essential goods in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is expected to see a marginal spike. Mahanagar Gas stated that despite the increase, CNG remains a more economical alternative compared to petrol and diesel in Western India.
