Tightening the Screws on Digital Content
The Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an immediate ban on five additional Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming platforms operating within the country. This move underscores the government’s continued enforcement of the IT Rules relating to digital media ethics and content moderation.
Charges of Objectionable Content
The bans were enforced due to the platforms repeatedly hosting and promoting what the government deemed “objectionable content,” which specifically includes obscenity, vulgarity, and material that violates community standards. The exact names of the platforms were listed in the official gazette notification blocking their URLs and apps.
A Warning to the Industry
This action serves as a stern warning to both niche, unfiltered streaming services and major global players. The regulatory landscape requires strict adherence to self-classification guidelines, and failure to self-regulate is increasingly resulting in swift, decisive punitive action by state authorities.
