Vodafone Idea Strikes Back: Retailer Commissions Hiked to 19% to Challenge Jio and Airtel

The War for the SIM Card: Vi Woos the ‘Kirana’ Store

In a bold move to arrest subscriber loss and expand its physical footprint, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a massive hike in retailer commissions. While market leaders Reliance Jio (1%) and Bharti Airtel (2%) maintain lean payouts, Vi is now offering commissions up to 3% on standard recharges and a staggering 19% on specific high-value recharge plans.

The strategy is clear: incentivize the millions of local mobile retailers across India to prioritize Vi SIM sales and recharges over competitors. For a small retailer, the difference in commission could be a game-changer for their monthly income, potentially shifting the ground-level sales dynamics in rural and semi-urban markets.

Execution is Key

While the high commissions are attractive, industry experts note that Vi still faces the massive challenge of improving its 5G network coverage. Cash incentives can drive short-term sales, but sustainable growth will require the company to deploy its recently raised capital into infrastructure to match the network quality of its rivals.
