The High Cost of Electrification
Volkswagen has announced a massive restructuring plan that includes laying off 50,000 employees by the year 2030. The decision is a direct result of the company’s aggressive pivot toward electric vehicles (EVs).
Automation and Efficiency
EV manufacturing requires significantly fewer sub-components and man-hours compared to traditional internal combustion engines. This efficiency gain, while environmentally positive, is necessitating a brutal reduction in the traditional manufacturing workforce.

Global Impact
The layoffs will primarily affect VW’s European and North American plants. The company intends to divert the billions saved in labor costs toward software development and battery technology to compete with the likes of Tesla and BYD.
