Summer Cooling Gets More Expensive
Consumers looking to beat the summer heat will likely face higher bills as Voltas, India’s leading air conditioner brand, is expected to increase AC prices by 5% to 15% in the coming weeks. The price hike is an unavoidable response to a confluence of macroeconomic and regulatory pressures.
Key Drivers: Currency and Copper
The primary driver behind the price increase is the continuous depreciation of the Indian Rupee (INR) against the US Dollar, which has inflated the cost of imported components like compressors. Compounding the issue is a sudden spike in global copper prices, an essential and heavily used material in AC condenser coils.
Energy Efficiency Upgrades
Adding to the manufacturing costs, mandatory upgrades in energy efficiency ratings by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) require the use of more advanced, higher-cost parts to meet stringer star-rating criteria. Voltas management noted that absorbing these compounded costs is no longer feasible without impacting margins.
