Messaging Tech Giant Achieves Historic Ranking Milestone in Indian Fintech

In a major shift across India’s digital payments landscape, Meta-owned WhatsApp Pay has officially surpassed fintech unicorn CRED in monthly Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transaction volume. Official operational data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for June 2026 reveals that WhatsApp Pay processed 150.48 million UPI transactions, edging past CRED’s 141.78 million monthly volume to claim a higher ranking in peer-to-peer and merchant payments.

The volume surge represents a dramatic turnaround for WhatsApp Pay, which struggled for years with stringent NPCI user-capping restrictions and delayed regulatory approvals. By seamlessly integrating in-chat UPI payments directly within its 500-million-strong Indian messaging interface, WhatsApp has effectively monetized peer-to-peer transfers and merchant chat transactions across Tier-2 and Tier-3 urban markets.

CRED Retains Lead in Gross Transaction Value Driven by Premium Bill Pay

While WhatsApp Pay achieved numerical volume dominance over CRED, financial metrics highlight contrasting user demographics and average ticket sizes. CRED maintained a commanding lead in total transaction value, processing ₹55,117 crore during the month compared to WhatsApp Pay’s ₹11,392 crore. This value gap reflects CRED’s stronghold among premium credit card holders executing high-value utility, rent, and credit card bill payments.

Industry analysts note that both platforms operate below the dominant market duopoly of PhonePe and Google Pay, which together command over 80% of total UPI transaction volume. PhonePe alone processed an astonishing 10.48 billion transactions in the same calendar month, underlining the immense scale gap remaining between top-tier market leaders and emerging contenders.

Meta Accelerates Business Messaging Monetization and Merchant Payments

The transaction surge aligns with Meta’s strategic push to transform WhatsApp into a comprehensive business commerce platform in India. With features like WhatsApp Flows, in-app catalog browsing, and seamless native checkout, Meta is positioning chat-based payments as the primary transactional bridge between small businesses and consumer bases, redefining social commerce across the subcontinent.
