The ChatGPT Advantage: India’s Services Exports Surge 30% Since AI Launch

AI isn’t Killing India’s IT; It’s Supercharging Exports

Despite fears of AI replacing Indian developers, the actual data tells a story of explosive growth. Since the public launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, India’s services exports have increased by nearly 30%. The World Bank’s Chief Economist for South Asia highlighted that India is uniquely positioned to gain from the AI revolution rather than be displaced by it.

The surge is attributed to Indian firms rapidly integrating generative AI into their workflows, allowing them to deliver more complex projects in shorter timeframes. Instead of charging for “hours worked,” firms are shifting toward “value-delivered” models, significantly increasing their revenue per employee.

Changing Dynamics: High-End Growth vs. Small Agency Struggles

While the overall numbers are record-breaking, the impact is uneven. Large-cap firms are seeing double-digit growth in digital transformation projects. However, some boutique agencies report that basic content and coding workloads have reduced, as clients now use AI to handle simpler tasks internally. India’s challenge now is to upskill its massive workforce to stay ahead of the “AI automation curve.”
