Alphabet-owned Google has made a decisive move in the quantum computing sector by acquiring Atlantic Quantum. The MIT-spun startup is renowned for its proprietary superconducting hardware that aims to solve the “noise” and error-rate issues currently plaguing quantum processors.
The acquisition is expected to merge Atlantic Quantum’s breakthroughs in qubit control with Google’s existing “Sycamore” quantum processor architecture. The goal: accelerate the timeline for achieving a large-scale, error-corrected quantum computer capable of simulating new molecules for drug discovery and optimizing global logistics networks.
Industrializing the Qubit
Google Quantum AI has been moving away from purely academic research toward “industrial-scale” quantum computing. By bringing Atlantic Quantum’s engineering team in-house, Google hopes to lead the market where competitors like IBM, Microsoft, and specialized startups like IonQ are all vying for supremacy.
