Reliance Shifts Focus to BESS Assembly
Reliance Industries is in talks with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s largest battery manufacturer, and other global suppliers. The discussions aim to procure components for its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at its upcoming gigafactory in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
The move represents a strategic adjustment in Reliance’s green energy plan. The company is transitioning its focus toward assembling pre-made battery cells into large-scale grid storage systems, moving away from immediate domestic cell manufacturing. The adjustment is partly due to export restrictions on advanced lithium-ion technologies by the Chinese government.

Supporting India’s 500 GW Renewable Energy Target
The Jamnagar energy storage complex is a central component of Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s clean energy strategy. The facility is designed to support grid stability as India works toward its national target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The BESS assembly facility is scheduled to begin production in the second half of 2026 with an initial capacity of 30–40 GWh.
